Moving to Dubai from the UK: Step-by-Step Guide

Moving to Dubai from the UK step-by-step guide

By Dubai Tax Resident Editorial Team · Last reviewed: October 2026

To move to Dubai from the UK, you need a UAE residence visa, a home in Dubai and a clean exit from the UK tax system. The visa usually comes through a job, your own UAE company, property or a Golden Visa. On the UK side, your tax position is decided by the Statutory Residence Test, and you inform HMRC with form P85 or your Self Assessment return. Done in the right order, most UK leavers can be living and working in Dubai within two to three months.

Key facts

  • Entry: British citizens get a visa on arrival for short visits
  • Residence: requires a residence visa and Emirates ID
  • UK tax: non-residence is decided by the Statutory Residence Test
  • Tell HMRC: form P85 or SA109 with your tax return
  • Tax treaty: the UK and UAE have a double tax agreement
  • Driving: UK licence holders can usually exchange for a UAE licence without a test
  • Flight time: about 7 hours London to Dubai

Step 1: Choose your visa route

British citizens can visit Dubai without applying in advance, but living there requires a residence visa. The main routes are:

  • Employment visa sponsored by a UAE employer.
  • Investor or partner visa through your own free zone or mainland company. See our business setup guide.
  • Golden Visa through AED 2 million in property, a salary of AED 30,000 a month or other qualifying routes. See our Golden Visa guide.
  • Green Visa or freelance permit for skilled employees and self-employed people.
  • Remote work visa for people employed by a company outside the UAE.

Step 2: Plan your UK tax exit

Moving to Dubai does not end UK tax by itself. Under the Statutory Residence Test, your residence depends on how many days you spend in the UK and how many UK ties you keep, such as family, accommodation and work. In your first years abroad, keeping a UK home available or leaving your family in the UK can make you resident even with fairly few UK days.

Split-year treatment can apply in the year you leave, so foreign income earned after departure is not taxed in the UK. If you plan to sell shares or receive large dividends, remember the temporary non-residence rules: if you return within five years, some gains and income realised abroad can be taxed when you come back.

Step 3: Tell HMRC and sort out UK income

  • P85 or SA109: use form P85 if you are not in Self Assessment, otherwise the residence pages of your return.
  • UK rental property: register under the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme to receive rent without tax deducted, and keep filing Self Assessment.
  • Selling UK property: as a non-resident you must report and pay any tax within 60 days of completion.
  • Pensions: UK pensions can usually stay where they are. Treaty relief may be available on some UK income under the UK-UAE double tax agreement.
  • National Insurance: check your record and current eligibility for voluntary contributions on GOV.UK.
  • ISAs: you can keep them, but generally cannot add new money while non-resident.

Step 4: Set up life in Dubai

  1. Housing: rent with a tenancy registered in Ejari. Budget for deposit and agency fees. See our cost of living guide.
  2. Residence visa and Emirates ID: medical test and biometrics after entry.
  3. Bank account: open a personal account once you have your Emirates ID.
  4. Health insurance: mandatory in Dubai. NHS cover generally ends when you stop living in the UK.
  5. Driving licence: UK licence holders can usually exchange their licence for a UAE one without a driving test.
  6. Schools: apply early; many British-curriculum schools have waiting lists.
  7. Tax Residency Certificate: after meeting the UAE tax residency tests, you can apply to the Federal Tax Authority for a certificate to support your position.

Frequently asked questions

Can a British citizen move to Dubai?

Yes. British citizens can enter Dubai visa-free for short visits and can live there with a residence visa through employment, their own company, property, a Golden Visa or a freelance or remote work permit.

Do I pay UK tax if I move to Dubai?

Not on foreign income once you are non-resident under the Statutory Residence Test. You remain taxable in the UK on UK-source income such as rental income, and may be resident if you keep too many UK ties or days.

How many days can I spend in the UK after moving to Dubai?

It depends on your UK ties. A recent leaver with no ties can spend up to 182 days, but with two ties the limit is 90 days and with three ties 45 days. Fewer than 16 days is always non-resident.

Is there a tax treaty between the UK and UAE?

Yes. The UK and UAE have a double tax agreement that helps decide residence if you are resident in both countries and can reduce UK tax on some types of income.

Can I keep my UK house when moving to Dubai?

Yes, but if it remains available to you it can create an accommodation tie under the Statutory Residence Test. Letting it out and registering as a non-resident landlord is a common solution.

Can I drive in Dubai with a UK licence?

Visitors can drive on a UK licence for a limited period. Once you become a resident, UK licence holders can usually exchange their licence for a UAE licence without taking a test.

What happens to my UK pension if I move to Dubai?

You can usually leave your UK pension where it is. Tax on withdrawals depends on your residence and the UK-UAE treaty. Transferring a pension abroad has specific rules and charges, so take advice first.

How long does it take to move to Dubai from the UK?

With a visa route ready, most people complete the move in two to three months. Setting up a company, finding schools or selling a UK property can extend the timeline.
