A move from Denmark to Dubai turns on one main question: whether you still have a home available in Denmark. Deregistering from CPR and obtaining a UAE residence visa are necessary steps, but neither decides Danish tax liability by itself.
For shareholders and company owners, the departure date can also trigger Danish exit tax on shares. Because we found no Denmark and UAE double tax treaty in force, the Danish rules carry more weight than they would for a move within Europe.
Key facts
- Full tax liability: as a main rule ends only when you sell the Danish home, end the lease or let it irrevocably for at least three years
- Return stays: a six-month stay in Denmark, including short holidays abroad, can make you fully taxable again
- Exit tax on shares: applies to holdings worth DKK 100,000 or more at departure, normally after at least seven years of Danish tax liability on share gains
- Tax treaty: no Denmark and UAE double tax treaty found in force; only an information exchange agreement
- CPR: report the move abroad digitally to your municipality through borger.dk
- UAE: residence visa, Emirates ID and, where needed, a Tax Residency Certificate from the Federal Tax Authority
Understand when full Danish tax liability ends
Skattestyrelsen’s moving-abroad guidance states that full tax liability as a main rule only ends when you sell your Danish home, terminate the lease or let it out for at least three years on terms you cannot terminate. A summer house used only for holidays is normally not treated as a home.
The legal guidance on when a person has a residence in Denmark explains that the decisive factor is whether you have a home at your disposal, in whole or in part. Actual housing arrangements decide the matter; registration in the population register or a postal address has no independent weight.
Family arrangements matter too. Skattestyrelsen’s guidance on ending full tax liability on departure notes that where one spouse moves and the other stays in the shared home, the spouse who moved normally keeps a Danish residence unless the relationship has actually ended.
Learn from the UAE ruling and the six-month rule
In binding ruling SKM2025.7.SR, the Tax Council confirmed that full tax liability ended for a person moving to the UAE who gave up a rented Danish apartment, owned no Danish property and had no access to a home through a partner or family, even though the Danish employer was kept.
The same ruling recalls the separate stay rule: a person without a Danish home becomes fully taxable after a stay of six months in Denmark, and short holidays abroad count towards the period. It also notes that very short access to a home, around one to two months, generally does not create a residence, while around three months can.
Keep a day-by-day travel log from the start. Visits for holidays and family events are normal, but longer stays, work in Denmark or a home that becomes available again should be reviewed before they happen.
Check exit tax on shares before the departure date
Skat.dk’s page on tax on shares when you move from Denmark states that if your shares and investment certificates have a total market value of DKK 100,000 or more, gains and losses are calculated as if you sold them when your liability ended. The rules normally apply if you were taxable on share gains in Denmark for at least seven years in total.
You can apply for deferral by reporting the holdings in TastSelv or on form 04.065 by 1 July of the year after you move, and then report annually while a deferred balance remains. Skat.dk states that no interest is charged on the deferred amount, but a move outside the EU and the Nordic countries requires adequate security. Sales, dividends and certain loans from the company can trigger payment.
Crypto is also affected: skat.dk explains that holdings are treated as sold at market value when your Danish tax liability ends. Check the current threshold and deadlines on skat.dk before you fix the date, and read our European departure-tax overview for comparison.
Know the treaty position between Denmark and the UAE
When we checked Skattestyrelsen’s overview of double tax treaties in October 2026, we found no treaty with the UAE in force. Denmark and the UAE have an agreement on the exchange of information in tax matters, signed in Copenhagen in 2015, which does not allocate taxing rights.
This has two consequences. First, there is no treaty tie-breaker: if you keep a Danish home, the UAE resident definition and a UAE certificate do not override Danish domestic rules. Second, skat.dk warns that living in a country without a treaty with Denmark can lead to both countries taxing the same income. Confirm the current status before relying on this, as treaty networks change.
Plan for Danish company owners
A Danish ApS or A/S remains a Danish company after you move, with its own tax and reporting obligations. Salary, board fees and dividends paid from Denmark to a non-resident can still be taxable in Denmark under limited tax liability, so map each payment before you leave and check the current treatment on skat.dk.
Managing a company from Dubai can create UAE questions without removing Danish ones. Our corporate-tax guide and business setup comparison cover the UAE framework.
Handle CPR, the health card and pensions
Borger.dk explains how to report departure from Denmark for more than six months: the report is made digitally to your municipality, and you can add your foreign address later. The Life in Denmark guide to leaving says you can report from four weeks before departure until five days after.
The same guide says the yellow health card only applies to people living in Denmark and should be destroyed, with the digital card reset in the app. ATP Livslang Pension cannot be paid before Danish retirement age, and ATP is not notified automatically of an address abroad, so contact ATP yourself.
Skat.dk’s guidance on Danish pensions after moving abroad states that where there is no treaty with your new country, Denmark taxes the payments. You can apply for exemption from pension yield tax on form 07.058 once you are no longer fully taxable. Skattestyrelsen also asks you to call 72 22 28 92 about a week after deregistering and leaving, and to keep a valid NemKonto.
Build the Dubai arrival sequence
Select the appropriate UAE residence visa for the main applicant and confirm family sponsorship. Then coordinate the medical test, Emirates ID, banking and a long-term lease. Our practical relocation guide explains the dependencies.
If you set up a company, the UAE corporate tax rate is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that, and qualifying free zone businesses that meet all conditions can keep their incentives. Budget for licence renewals, insurance and school costs using current quotations.
Decide what happens to the Danish home
Selling, ending a lease and letting out irrevocably for at least three years are the routes skat.dk names. Letting for a shorter period or keeping a room available for your own use normally leaves the question open. If you own several year-round homes, all of them need to be dealt with.
Document the decision: sale contract, lease termination or the letting agreement with its notice terms. If you later buy or rent a home in Denmark, review your stays from that date, because access to a home can restore full liability faster than the six-month stay rule.
Keeping a property abroad has its own consequences, which our guide on keeping a home in Europe after a Dubai move discusses.
Separate residence from the treatment of particular income
Prepare a schedule covering Danish salary, board fees, dividends, pensions, rental income and planned share sales. For each one, note what applies if your full liability has ended and what applies if it continues.
Do not assume that a UAE tax outcome reduces Danish tax. Without a treaty, relief depends on Danish domestic provisions. If a business sale is planned, obtain advice before signing, and keep acquisition and valuation evidence for the exit-tax calculation.
Plan practical responsibilities left in Denmark
Decide who handles property management, company correspondence and official mail. Keep access to MitID, Digital Post and TastSelv so you can meet the annual reporting deadlines for any deferred exit tax.
Where another person acts for you, give them the authority the task actually needs. Informal help with mail is different from authority to sign for a company. Save copies of every submission and decision.
Make the new Dubai routine credible and maintainable
Set up the household and working pattern you actually intend to keep. If family follows later, record the stages. Choose housing and schooling that fit the real budget rather than making commitments only to support an application.
A useful plan ends with a list of continuing Danish obligations and a review calendar. It should show why Dubai is the genuine new base and what still needs handling in Denmark, rather than relying on a visa or an address change alone.
Keep evidence and review changes
Save housing documents, authority correspondence, travel and work records, and a clear description of retained Danish interests. Reassess if family returns to Denmark, you acquire a Danish home or your company role changes.
The Federal Tax Authority issues a Tax Residency Certificate to individuals who meet its criteria, such as 183 days in the UAE, or 90 days combined with a UAE residence permit and a permanent place of residence or employment/business in the UAE. Our guide to the UAE tax residence tests covers the details. The Dubai Tax Resident guides cover the practical move, while the Danish departure position should be assessed on its own merits by a qualified tax adviser. Frequently asked questions
As a main rule, Skattestyrelsen says full tax liability ends when you sell your Danish home, end the lease or let it irrevocably for at least three years, and actually leave. A home still available to you, or a spouse remaining in the shared home, normally keeps your Danish residence.
We found no Denmark and UAE double tax treaty in force when we checked in October 2026. The two countries have an agreement on exchange of tax information signed in 2015. Without a treaty there is no tie-breaker, so Danish domestic rules decide whether you remain taxable in Denmark. Check the current status with Skattestyrelsen.
Possibly. Skat.dk states that shares worth DKK 100,000 or more in total at departure are treated as sold, normally if you have been taxable on share gains in Denmark for at least seven years. You can apply for deferral, but for a move outside the EU and the Nordic countries adequate security is required.
Report the move abroad digitally to your municipality through borger.dk if you will live abroad for more than six months. Borger.dk asks you to report before departure, and Life in Denmark says you can report from four weeks before to five days after you leave.
The yellow health card only applies to people living in Denmark, so Life in Denmark says to destroy it when you leave and reset the digital card in the app. Arrange UAE health insurance from your arrival date.
Pensions can generally be paid abroad, but ATP Livslang Pension is not paid before Danish retirement age and ATP must be given your new address. Skat.dk says that where Denmark has no tax treaty with your new country, Denmark taxes the pension payments.
Yes, but stays matter. A stay of six months in Denmark, including short holidays abroad, can create full tax liability again, and reacquiring access to a Danish home can do so sooner. Keep a travel log and review longer visits in advance.
A residence visa in the right category, an Emirates ID, a home lease and a bank account are the basics. The Federal Tax Authority issues a Tax Residency Certificate to individuals who meet its residence criteria, such as 183 days in the UAE in the relevant period.
