A mid-year move to Dubai does not automatically divide your tax year at the departure date. First establish how the country you leave treats residence during a transition year. Then coordinate income, company activity, family arrangements and the UAE arrival sequence.
The date on an airline ticket, an authority notification, a residence permit and the start of a tenancy may all differ. None should be assumed to control every tax consequence.
Identify the tax periods before choosing dates
List the tax year in each relevant country and the business’s financial year. The UAE personal presence tests and a company’s accounting period answer different questions.
The UK has specific split-year cases under its residence framework. HMRC’s SRT guidance sets out the structure. Our split-year and temporary non-residence guide explains why relief is conditional.
By contrast, Spain’s residence guidance generally assesses status for the whole calendar year. Do not transfer a UK-style split-year assumption to another country.
Build an income and event calendar
| Item | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Salary and bonuses | Work period, payment terms and where duties were performed |
| Dividends and director fees | Legal entitlement, company residence, withholding and personal status |
| Asset sales | Disposal timing, source rules and potential exit charges |
| Business invoices | Supplier, service period and accounting treatment |
| Pensions or deferred income | Specific domestic and treaty provisions |
Payment after departure does not necessarily make income unrelated to the earlier period. Likewise, issuing a UAE invoice does not move services already delivered by a different supplier.
Have significant transactions reviewed before acting. The European exit-tax overview identifies why unrealised gains and shareholdings can matter even without an immediate sale.
Review the company transition separately
Identify who signs contracts, directs staff and makes strategic decisions before and after the move. A retained European entity can continue its obligations while activity in Dubai creates additional ones.
If you establish a UAE business, agree the effective start of contracts, invoicing and asset use. Do not backdate documents to create a cleaner-looking transition. Our corporate-tax guide covers the UAE framework.
Coordinate the household’s actual departure
Decide when the former home stops being available and when the new home becomes usable. Record a spouse’s and children’s plans, including school terms. If family remains temporarily, document the arrangement and obtain advice on its significance.
Check insurance start dates, ongoing medication and overlap between accommodation costs. A staged move may be practical, but its facts should be reflected in the residence analysis.
The relocation guide helps sequence residence, identity, banking and housing without assuming they finish on the same day.
Make notifications with evidence of submission
Identify the tax, population register, social-security, employer and banking procedures that apply. Give accurate dates and keep acknowledgements. Update contact details so correspondence does not disappear into the old mailbox.
A notification records what you report; it is not always an authority’s decision that you are non-resident. Continue required returns and answer follow-up requests.
Preserve records from both sides of the date
Download payroll, investment and bank statements before losing access. Save the old tenancy ending, sale or letting documents, travel history and the new residence and housing evidence.
Keep the underlying facts even where the tax treatment is uncertain. The FTA residency guide provides the UAE framework. Our certificate guide explains how evidence supports it.
Distinguish the move date from the income event
For each material payment, record the period of work or ownership, the legal entitlement, approval date where relevant, payment date and connected country. Different tax rules can attach significance to different elements.
For example, a bonus paid after departure may relate to duties performed earlier. A dividend may have company and withholding consequences separate from where the shareholder’s bank account is located. A business invoice can concern services supplied before a new UAE entity existed.
Do not use the receipt date as the sole organising principle. Preserve the documents needed for the applicable analysis and have significant transactions reviewed before treating the proceeds as available after-tax cash.
Build a transition ledger for unfinished business
List open customer contracts, deposits, work in progress, unpaid invoices, supplier obligations and assets used by the business. Assign each to the correct legal person before and after the move.
Suppose an old supplier has received a customer advance and a new UAE company will perform future work. Establish whether a transfer is legally and commercially appropriate, how the customer agrees and how the balances are accounted for. Changing the invoice logo alone does not resolve those obligations.
Keep final returns and closure tasks visible if an old activity stops. “No more new sales” and “all obligations completed” are different milestones, sometimes separated by several months.
Review the first full year as well as the transition year
A move can have an expensive or administratively complex first year while producing a clearer position the following year. Model both before deciding that the initial result makes the whole relocation attractive or unattractive.
The following year still needs the planned facts to occur. A family that remains in the former country, continuing work there or a retained available home can keep questions open. Do not assume a successful residence application automatically produces the expected annual tax outcome.
Where a departure rule depends on a later period or a return to the country, preserve enough flexibility to comply with it. A short-term plan to return may need a different analysis from an indefinite relocation.
Coordinate document dates without backdating
Accept that genuine events can have different dates. A person may enter temporary accommodation before signing a permanent tenancy, complete identity processing later and open a bank account later still.
Explain the chronology and keep the evidence. Do not backdate contracts or minutes to make the move appear tidier. If a document contains an error, correct it through the responsible organisation and retain the explanation. Keep the resulting dates, notices and supporting documents in one organised residency record for your Dubai move.
Use the same factual timeline for advisers, accountants and relevant applications. This reduces the risk of different conclusions being based on inconsistent accounts of the move.
Keep the final pre-departure review practical
Before travelling, identify the decisions that remain reversible and those that do not. A flexible hotel booking is different from a completed asset sale, resigned employment or a signed annual lease.
Check who will monitor official correspondence, how final statements will be obtained and which filings remain due after departure. Preserve access to bank and tax accounts without relying on an old phone number that is about to be cancelled.
Finally, set a review after the first few months to compare the planned and actual move. Update the record where family, housing, travel or business circumstances changed. This makes the transition-year return a documented account of real events rather than a reconstruction based only on the departure ticket.
Use a decision checkpoint before the flight
Confirm the transition-year analysis, next year’s intended position, treatment of major payments, unresolved ties and every filing deadline. Where a fact remains uncertain, keep it visible in the plan instead of describing the move as tax-free from day one.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, but a mid-year move does not automatically split your tax year at the departure date. First establish how the country you leave treats residence in a transition year. The UK has specific split-year cases, while Spain generally assesses residence for the whole calendar year, so do not apply a UK-style split-year assumption to another country.
Not necessarily. Payment after departure does not make income unrelated to the earlier period, and a bonus paid after you leave may relate to duties performed before the move. Record the work period, legal entitlement, approval and payment dates and the connected country for each material payment, and have significant transactions reviewed before treating the proceeds as after-tax cash.
Not by itself. A notification to a tax authority or population register records what you report; it is not always the authority’s decision that you are non-resident. Give accurate dates, keep acknowledgements, continue required returns and answer follow-up requests. Your flight date, residence permit and tenancy start may all differ, and none automatically controls every tax consequence.
Treat the company transition separately from your personal move. Identify who signs contracts, directs staff and makes strategic decisions before and after the move. A retained European entity keeps its obligations while Dubai activity can add new ones. Agree the effective start of contracts, invoicing and asset use for any UAE business, and never backdate documents.
